Thread Veins & Microsclerotherapy

Thread veins and broken capillaries can cause unsightly red streaks and blotches under the skin. Typically occurring on the face as a result of ageing, sun damage or hormone imbalances, the appearance of these veins can be unsightly and embarrassing for the sufferer.

Prominent veins can also occur in the legs, often red, blue or purple in colour. In a similar sense to facial thread veins, such leg veins can be embarrassing and can result in many women feeling unable to wear skirts without tights.

We offer a range of treatment options depending on the location and severity of your veins.

Thread Veins

£80 per session (face)

At Nurse Annie Aesthetic Clinic we offer a variety of targeted laser and IPL treatments to successfully eliminate unsightly veins and capillaries.

An intense flash of light is administered to the treatment area, heating up the veins in question and rapidly sealing them off. This causes the veins to collapse, eventually being absorbed by the body within around 2-3 weeks.

Treatment is recommended every 4 weeks, with a course of 6 sessions for best results.

Microsclerotherapy

Leg spider vein removal – 2 sessions £350

Microsclerotherapy is a technique used to treat spider veins or thread veins of the legs. It is a relatively straightforward procedure which involves injecting a small amount of a liquid (known as sclerosant) into the veins which destroys them and causes them to disappear over time. The veins are so small that a very powerful magnifying glass with a strong circular light is used in order to get the very best view of the target thread veins or spider veins. As soon as the sclerosant is inside the vein, the vein needs to be compressed and this is done by taping a swab to the skin.

It is suitable for use on thread veins on the legs or body, provided they are beneath the heart. Thread veins on the face are better treated with our laser. As gravity has an effect on the blood in the veins and also as the skin is more sensitive to burns, Microsclerotherapy is the most preferable treatment for thread veins below the heart.

Post procedure

To achieve optimum results, the treated thread and spider veins need to be continuously compressed for 21 days and nights. This is the time needed for the body to turn the dying vein into scar tissue and is best achieved by wearing compression stockings.

Patients are encouraged not to remove the stockings until 22 days post-procedure. If they are removed too early, blood will return into the vein and it will clot, leaving a brown staining. This staining can fade over the following months but sometimes it can become permanent.

Results from Microsclerotherapy

95% of patients are very pleased with the results of their Microsclerotherapy with 80% saying the result was excellent.

In general, patients need several sessions to get the optimal result and quite often the best results are only seen after a minimum of two to three months.

  1. Proper bandaging following sclerotherapy is critical for the success of the procedure. Leave the cotton balls, compression bandages, and compression stockings in place for 24 hours. After 24 hours, remove the compres- sion tape and cotton balls. You may find it easier to remove the compression tape after soaking in a warm bath or shower. Put the compression stockings back on after the bandages are removed.
  2. Compression stockings should be worn at all times until bedtime for 14 days. It is not necessary to sleep with your stockings on. Remove them prior to bathing.
  3. Bruising and discoloration are common after sclerotherapy. These issues will resolve over a number of weeks. It is very important to avoid sun exposure to the treatment areas after sclerotherapy. Sun exposure can cause hyper- pigmentation (skin darkening) in treated areas. Wear protective clothing and a broad-spectrum sun block for at least 1 month after the treatment.
  4. Exercise following sclerotherapy is okay. Avoid strenuous, high-impact activities for one week after the treatment.
  5. Avoid excessively hot baths, showers, or hot tubs for one week after the treatment.
  6. Occasionally, when treating larger vessels, a small clot or “knot” may develop. If this happens, we would like for you to call us. Sometimes we do a simple extraction of this clot or may opt to let it dissolve on its own.
  7. Pain after sclerotherapy is usually minimal and goes away after 1-2 days. If you experience discomfort, you may take Paracetamol. If you experience significant pain, redness, swelling, crusting, or bleeding, call our Nurse Practitioner immediately.
